Although less known, sweetgrass is used in sacred rituals, you can use it to smudge, cleanse and purify your house. It is also a sacred plant within American Indian tribes and grows in the Rocky Mountains. Sweetgrass is also called ‘the braids of mother earth’. Before harvesting, it is braided. She is dried and sold as a braid.

Sweetgrass has a unique vanilla-like scent – one of the most beloved of all Western plants for burning. Sweetgrass is often burned in combination with the sacred wood (palo santo). It creates a positive mood.

Directions: Light the end of the Sweetgrass with a lighter or a match, and allow braid to smoulder and fill your space with the sweet scent of the high plains. Relight as desired. Have a bowl of sand nearby to extinguish.

• Burn sweetgrass braids in a well-ventilated area.
• Always use with a fire-safe holder or bowl and place on a level, heat resistant surface.
• Ensure ash and embers are caught safely.
