The abalone shell or “mother of pearl” is traditionally used to burn herbs, incense and smudges. Carry under your sage or sacred herb smudge stick to catch any falling ash, or a smudge stick can be lent against the edge while still alight. (Of course, never leave it unattended).
These abalone shells come from South Africa. They are farmed and are not caught in the wild. This means natural habitat is not destroyed and the supply is sustainable.
