When smudging with Palo Santo Wood Chips, you can use a fire-bowl, clay pot or abalone shell. Light the wood chips and allow them to burn for a few moments until well lit. Once the pile has a strong flame, fan out the flame and allow the smouldering smoke to fill the room. Alternatively, you can burn these small pieces of Palo Santo over a charcoal disc.
Everyone knows Palo Santo. Maybe not by name, but at least because the fragrance is often used in some Finnish sauna’s or for home fragrances or massage oils. The smell comes from the Palo Santo wood that grows in South America. It’s a special kind of wood for its smoke purifies the environment when you burn it. The fragrance is earthly and natural, but mystic at the same time.
Palo Santo literally means holy wood and, just like white sage, it originates from the native Indians in South America. Centuries ago they already used it during smudging ceremonies to clear the aura and to heal from negative influences. In Europe people choose to buy the holy wood to clean their houses or just for the fragrances in its purest form.
Not only is smudging used in spiritual practices, but it can also have medicinal benefits for those who are affected by poor air quality. Due to its anti-bacterial properties, Palo Santo can help those who suffer from asthma, headaches, lung problems and respiratory issues, as well as general coughs and colds. (1)
